There is a huge amount of electronic reference information available to you at Edinburgh University. This page is a guide to the most useful on-line resources for Civil and Enviornmental Engineering. The resources are generally available from a University computer, or via the MyEd Library pages. (If you have problems accessing the resources, please use 'Ask a Librarian' in MyEd).
Once you have found the information you need, remember that this information is someone's intellectual property. If you use the information in your own written work, you must give a clear reference to its source.
Information on performing and reporting a Literature Review can be found in the linked presentation.

Internet Search Engines |
|
Internet search engines (such as Google, or Google Scholar) are can be useful when you are trying to get a feel for a new subject, or to find out the names of researchers working on the topic. Many researchers also put versions of their papers online. However, there is no quality-control on the internet and you must treat any information you find on the internet critcally. If you find something relevant on the public internet, follow it up by searching for work by the same authors in scholarly literature (such as tehnical reports and papers), but it is far better to look for technical publications, described below. |
|
Technical Journals |
|
Research is recorded in Technical Journals. These give a permanent record of the research, which is peer-reviewed to ensure that the work is correct and of a high quality. Most engineering journals are now published electronically, and many can be accessed on-line through UoE subscriptions. For example:
If you know the name of the journal you want to look in, use the library's journal seach facility to find out how to access it. |

Literature
Databases |
|
Literature Databases allow you to search for journal papers on particular topics. These databases contain the titles, authors, abstracts etc for a very large number of articles, and if UoE has an online subscription to the article, you will be able to download the full article. Two of the most useful databases for engineering are Engineering Village and Web of Knowledge. |
The Construction Information Service provide full-text publications from a variety of construction industry sources, such as CIRIA, BRE, IStructE, SCI, the Concrete Society and nCE+. The industry technical reports are not usually listed in literature databases such as Web of Science. The Construction Information Service can be accessed by following the link from the UoE library's list of databases. |

British Standards Online |
|
British Standards Online (BSOL) contains British (BSI), European (CEN/Eurocodes) and (some) International (ISO) Standards. |
