10. Research Interests
Introduction
His primary interests are applying signal and information processing techniques
for application in communication and radar systems.
He has a continuing interest in the research he conducted during the 1970's on
military spread spectrum communication and electronic support measures
equipment for the gathering, analysis, sorting and classification of electronic
signals.
Most of his research has been stimulated by electronic systems requirements and
he maintains regular contact with many civil service and private industrial
research and development laboratories.
Initially, his research interests were in SAW devices and in particular
programmable analogue matched filters, employing hybrid microelectronic
switching matrices, for detecting phase coded waveforms.
He pioneered the application of these programmable devices as spread spectrum
communication receivers.
He also made significant contributions to the design of SAW discrete Fourier
transform processors, for the realisation of fast, coherent, frequency
hopped waveform synthesisers, and investigated their application to wideband
signal analysis.
These processors, which were more compact than digital processors, were used as
low power, wideband spectrum analysers for signal intercept and for
FSK detection in satellite communication systems.
Throughout the 1980's he initiated and supervised studies on the design of
digital adaptive filters.
This covered the use of linear tapped transversal, lattice, frequency domain
`fast convolution' and neural network based nonlinear equaliser techniques.
This latter work has investigated both Volterra series and radial basis
function (RBF) structures.
The work on adaptive RBF structures provides quantifiable and significant
performance improvements over linear adaptive filters and this fact has been
recognised by a premium award, reprinting of his published results in
research monographs and regular citations.
The particularly significant RBF paper no. 58
in Appendix D on the orthogonal least
squares processor design, which now has received over 1,000 citations.
This high number results from both its widespread applicability in the
training of linear-in-the-parameter neural networks and its subsequent
adoption by researchers in the sparse signal representation community
as a computionally efficient method for orthogonal matching pursuit.
These supervised studies on linear and nonlinear adaptive filter based
receivers have widespread applications in interference cancellation and
equalisation for communications systems ranging from speechband data modems,
spread spectrum systems, to line of sight digital microwave radio-relay
equipments.
With the resurgence of interest in civilian spread spectrum or code
division multiple access (CDMA) systems he instigated the
investigation of new receiver designs.
These offer increased subscriber capacity through adaptive interference
cancellation, and achieve improved performance in multipath propagation
scenarios, through receiver adaptive filtering and array processing.
The Edinburgh group is recognised internationally for its
pioneering contributions
on CDMA multi-user detection techniques
as they were one of the first groups to investigate this technique
through the design of signal dependent (adaptive) receivers,
see next section.
Also their contributions to cellular
basestation array processing, through the use of advanced DSP techniques
for reducing the spatial interference, are internationally recognised.
In 2002 and again in 2007 he was elected to the executive board of the Mobile VCE,
the UK industry-academia collaborative programme in
mobile systems research.
Paper Premium awards
In 1974 and again in 1977 he was awarded the Bulgin premium from the then
Institution of Electronic and Radio Engineers, see Appendix D,
papers no. 4 & 13.
In 1982 he was awarded their Lord Mountbatten premium for a review paper
no. 23.
In 1994 he was awarded both the IEE Marconi and J. Langham Thompson premia for
two separate papers nos 65 & 68.
Research Contracts
He has prepared the initial proposals and acted as principal investigator on
over 30 EPSRC sponsored research grants, see Appendix A.
He has also been involved in conducting 18 research contracts for industrial
companies, 8 infrastructure awards, Appendix A,
and acts as an occasional consultant.
PhD supervision
He has been responsible for directly supervising 19 PhD programmes, Appendix
C, up to the time when he moved to the HoD/HoS position.
Publications, Textbooks and Patents
Included in over 400 publications, are four books and eight book chapters.
The most significant of these are the undergraduate textbooks on Digital Signal
Processing (350pp) published by Macmillan/Palgrave in 1998 and
Digital Communications (730pp)
published by Prentice-Hall/Pearson Education in 1997,
with enlarged second editions of both these books
(380 pp and 1,000 pp respectively) published in 2003 and 2004.
The Digital Communications first edition
was reprinted in 1998, and twice in 2000,
with also a China Machine Press english language reprint
for the second edition in 2004
and a chinese translated abbreviated edition published in 2006.
There is also a 2008 Indian reprint edition and a
full third edition was published in 2009.
The signal processing textbook was reprinted and translated into
Tiawanese in 2000, is the adopted textbook for the
University of Oxford/IET continuing education course on DSP
and is listed as a DSP reference in Wikipedia.
His previous research monograph "Adaptive Filters" which was published
in 1985 in the
Prentice-Hall Signal Processing Series was also reprinted and translated
into Russian in 1988.
He has published over 125 refereed papers and letters, predominantly in the
Transactions and Proceedings of the IEEE (USA) and IEE (UK).
He has 2 substantive 30+ page research reviews in publications nos. 36 & 52,

His regular attendance at, for example, the annual IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium
and subsequently the major
International Conferences on Signal Processing (ICASSP and
EUSIPCO) and mobile communications (ISSSTA, PIMRC, VTC and GLOBECOM)
has resulted in much
of the research being formally reported in conference papers prior to
publication as substantive review and research papers.
Seven patent applications have also been submitted in the UK and USA,
Appendix B, with 4 granted as full international patent awards.

Consultancies
He held a personal consultancy with Racal-MESL, Newbridge, Midlothian, from
1978 to 1983.
This was concerned with extending SAW chirp filters to applications in signal
analysis and identification.
Two patents were submitted on Racal's behalf at this time.
He also consults occasionally for BAE SYSTEMS,
Wolfson Microelectronics Limited and their
clients such as Hewlett Packard, GEC Marconi Avionics,
Honeywell and DERA Malvern in communication and radar signal and system design.
Personal
His main hobbies are stamp collecting, badminton and golf.
He is also a do-it-yourself enthusiast but his time is at a premium due to his
commitments to the IEE and his eldership at Mayfield Parish Church,
Edinburgh, where he is actively involved in a number of committees.
