June 17, 2005: Apparenty, to receive such a simple thing as an international conference travel grant from the Royal Society one has to be at his/her current academic position for at least 3 years. This does not apply to UK/EU researchers. Now let ’s imagine for a second two young lecturers at a Brisish University, one of them from the UK and another one, say, from Ukraine. Although, seemingly they belong to the same society, the researcher from Ukraine is not eligible for the Royal Society travel grant. Is it fair? When I pointed this out to a Royal Society representative, the reponse was: “ Yes, you just have to wait 3 years”.
