Electromagnetic polarization

Horizontal polarization is defined as the electric field, , of the incident wave being parallel to the surface off which it is reflecting. Thus the magnetic field, , is perpendicular to the surface, and lies in a plane known as the plane of incidence (Figure 3-2). Vertical polarization is defined as the electric field being perpendicular to the surface, and the magnetic field being parallel (Figure 3-3).
