HERKEN

Herken is a group of musicians from Penicuik, Midlothian, Scotland. We formed partly through St. James the Less Church, Penicuik, partly through Penicuik Folk Club and partly through just being friends who enjoy making music together. We sing a wide range of songs, some of which we write ourselves. Most of our stuff is more-or-less "folkie". Some of it is overtly Christian music, some of it is not. We have a CD of a show called The Man (see below) and are happy to be asked to perform The Man, to perform a wider range of Christian music, or to offer an evening of folk material with little or no Christian content.

Herken is simply a Scottish "corruption" of "Hearken" - meaning "come and listen".  It's pronounced "Herr-Ken".  Our originally-planned name was a nice (we thought) meaningless Celtic-sounding word that rhymes with Herken (and begins with the letter "M").  Then we found that it meant something inappropriate and changed our minds.  Google it and see how close we came to embarassment.

The Man : Jesus Story in folk songs and tunes

The Man is a set of songs, tunes and short linking readings that tell the story of The Man Jesus, in "folk" style. The CD of The Man was released on CD  in September, 2006.  there is now a more choir-based "prequel" to The Mann, called "The Boy" - a Nativity play with folk songs written to carry the story. t was performed for the first time at Christmas in 2006, in St. James the Less Church, Penicuik
