Engineering at The University of Edinburgh

picture of a bridge representing Civil and Environmental EngineeringEngineering has a long history at The University of Edinburgh since the formation of the Regius Chair in 1868, spanning over 130 years of research and development.

We offer a large range of degrees, grouped into four main Engineering disciplines. All of the Engineering disciplines may be combined with the study of management, leading to combined degrees, e.g. in "Mechanical Engineering with Management". (Further details are given in the sections dealing with the individual disciplines).

Produce virtually any material or product by using processes that cause the raw materials to change their chemical or physical composition, structure, energy content or physical state.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Degrees

Create sustainable cities through designing novel structures (buildings, bridges), efficient transport systems, clean water provision, and restoring and protecting the natural environment.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering Degrees

Design and manufacture of circuits, chips and electronic goods through to producing and distributing electricity to homes and industry.

Use materials (solids, fluids, gases) and structures in innovative ways to design and create "machines" and devices.

General Engineering

Additionally, it is possible to apply for a general Engineering course (H100) that allows you to defer making a choice between the four disciplines until half way through the first year of study.

First class teaching from a department that shows a genuine passion for the subject, while demonstrating course creditability with its strong links to major companies.
