Why Study Mechanical Engineering at Edinburgh

Representation of Mechanical EngineeringThe School of Engineering at The University of Edinburgh is of a medium-size with a strong emphasis on both teaching and research. We provide a friendly environment for learning, with guidance and pastoral care being offered throughout the course. In the 2001 Teaching Quality Assessment (QAA) assessment of teaching quality we were awarded with the highest possible rating.

The Mechanical Engineering laboratories and workshops are equipped with all the facilities required to back up taught lecture material. Students also use advanced design software packages that are commonly used in industry. There is an emphasis on experimental work throughout all the degree programmes, with team work and problem solving used from 1st year onwards.

Our curriculum is structured to help students develop the skills necessary to become professional engineers, though a combination of lecture modules, laboratory work, design exercises, group and individual projects.  We aim to teach the scientific principles underpinning mechanical engineering and to show how these principles can be applied to design solutions to real engineering problems. Practical skills are taught in a programme of laboratory and workshop sessions.

All of our degrees are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE).
