Years 1 and 2 of Engineering degrees at The University of Edinburgh

All BEng and MEng degrees have a common structure in the first year of the course. They are designed such that students have the maximum flexibility to change their degree options if they feel that this is appropriate.

Depending upon the course that has been signed up for, various subjects (known as core subjects) are prescribed. Others can be chosen from a list of subjects that the University offers which will timetable with the prescribed subjects.

All Engineering degrees include Mathematics subjects in the early years, plus the subject(s) of the degree chosen. Most courses have the opportunity to study an additional subject of the student's choosing, others, including degrees which are joint between subjects, do not support this option.

If a student decides that they are more interested in one of their subjects that is not their originally chosen topic, then a transfer between degrees may be possible depending upon the options taken and the particular degree they are signed up for. Flexibility for transfer is greatest during first year, and diminishes the further into the degree the student progresses.

Please return to the list of courses from which you can select the course(s) you are interested in to find out more detailed information.
