Looking for a PhD to start in October 2010?

Two PhD positions in advanced optical microscopy, at the school of Engineering, University of Edinburgh (start dates October 2010, UK students only).

1. “CARS microscopy of biological samples” with Dr Andy Downes

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) microscopy is a new technique for visualizing otherwise transparent molecules, by exciting their vibrations. The candidate will choose their own area of research to apply and use our CARS microscope and Raman spectrometer to characterize biological samples. For full details click here.

Informal Enquiries to Dr Andy Downes (tel: 0131 651 7072, e-mail: andy.downes@ed.ac.uk)

Closing date: 31 March 2010. Stipend 2010/11 £13650 tax free. UK students only. Applicants require at least a 2:1 degree (masters preferred). Knowledge of cell biology or optics preferred.

Funding is subject to approval by the School of Engineering. Click here for Employer Profile.

2. “Optimization of nanometre scale optical microscopy” with Dr Andy Downes

Optical microscopy is normally limited by the wavelength of light, to around 200 nm. By combining optical microscopy with atomic force microscope, we can achieve 10 nm resolution. The candidate will characterize and optimize tips – to increase signal levels and improve the  and use the best tips for microscopy of biological samples. For full details click here.
