The Scottish Microelectronics Centre (SMC) was announced on the 16th Nov 1998 ( bulletin report). Ind was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 2000. It is sited" in a purpose built facility at the University's Science and Engineering campus at King's Buildings and initially consisted of approximately 300m2 of class 10 cleanrooms and 1000m22 of office and laboratory space. Over 250m2 of the office and laboratory space in the building is available for rent to commercial organisations with the Institute of Integrated Micro and Nano Systems from then Department of Electronics and Electronic Engineering occupying the rest. Two of the cleanroom modules (64m2) were designated for rental with the remaining areas containing fabrication and metrology equipment which was made available for use by those associated with the Centre.

The Centre was a joint venture between the University of Edinburgh , Scottish Enterprise and Lothian and Edinburgh Enterprise Ltd . (Photographs showing the SMC during construction can be viewed). University research staff played a key role within the Centre, operating the cleanrooms and process equipment as well as helping to provide the support and infrastructure required by SMEs.

In 2009 200m2 of cleanrooms were built to provide extra space for equipment.
