SUPERGEN Consortia at IES
|
IES leads the EPSRC-funded Supergen Marine Energy Research Consortium to conduct research into marine energy conversion and delivery. Its work has been extended for an additional four years and is collaborative with the universities of Heriot Watt, Strathclyde, Lancaster and Queens University Belfast. Twenty national and international marine energy and electricity supply companies are collaborating in the work.

IES is part of the FlexNet Consortium (formerly Future Network Technologies) searching for solutions to the problems posed by high reliance on renewable energy sources. The consortium's unique power systems approach includes inter-disciplinary work with experts in economics, engineering and environmental fields. The consortium consists of IES together with Imperial College, Strathclyde, Surrey, Manchester, Birmingham, Bath, Cambridge and Cardiff Universities.

February 2006 saw the launch of a £2.8 million project funded by EPSRC and a range of industrial partners. The project is a collaboration between the Universities of Manchester, Southampton, Edinburgh, Strathclyde, Liverpool and Queens Belfast. The consortium will be be tasked with searching for means of maintaining and enhancing reliability of energy supply at minimum cost despite ageing plant, changing environmental requirements and a reduced skills base.
IES will be leading a package of work related to "Enhanced network performance and planning" which will include integrated network assessment and asset replacement methodologies and a security analysis of the interdependence between gas and electricity networks.

The PV21 project started in April 2004 with an inital budget of £4.5 million and was renewed for 4 years from April 2008. It is the UK's largest ever single research programme on solar cells and its key objective is to make it possible for manufacturers to halve the cost of solar energy. The consortium consists of IES together with NEWI, Durham, Bath, Southampton, Northumbria, Imperial, Southbank and Cranfield Universities together with 8 industrial partners including Pilkington. IES's Dr Mark Winskel contributes his expertise on innovation and learning rates.
