Graduates
Energy issues and climate change are rarely out of the news, showing the vital importance of these challenges and highlights the growing need for graduates who command the appropriate skills and knowledge to make a difference. This view is supported by the rapid growth in employment opportunities in the energy and environmental sectors.
Graduates from our MSc Programme go on to a wide range of activities. Some take up PhD opportunities at Edinburgh and elsewhere; some return to jobs and academia in their own countries; some take up employment with well-known companies in Scotland and the UK, e.g. with energy utilities/companies (National Grid Co, E.ON, Areva T&D, ABB, Shell, Bosch), energy consultancies (WS Atkins, Halcrow, Garrad Hassan, Elders Consulting Eng. LLP), construction companies (MW Kellogg, Arup, Faber Maunsell AECOM) and wind/marine renewable companies (Aquamarine Power, Community Windpower), as well as elsewhere in the EU.
Here's what some of our recent graduates had to say about the MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems.
Will (Class of 2010) said:
"I thoroughly enjoyed the course and believe that it has helped me get into a career that I enjoy and that has the potential to develop.
My favourite bits of the course would have to have been the power systems lectures with the camaraderie of the group sessions in the
computer lab as well as the broad overview that the all the different lectures made up."
Fionan (Class of 2010) said:
"The MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems was an intense but very enjoyable and worthwhile course where we were introduced to many of the issues,
technologies and possibilities surrounding the energy industry. After the course, I quickly got employment with a Scottish wave energy developer
and am now working in an exciting and dynamic market which I thoroughly enjoy. Without the experience and tuition of leading academics at Edinburgh
University this would simply not have been possible. I would certainly recommend this course for anyone who is interested in renewable energy and
would like to further develop their skill set to enhance their employment opportunities."
Diarmuid (Class of 2010) said:
"Studying at an internationally renowned university and graduating with an MSc in a rapidly growing field has opened many doors for me. I am currently
working in Spain with the MSc being key to getting the job I wanted. Living in Edinburgh is also a great experience!"
Una (Class of 2010) said:
"I found the course interesting and challenging and the MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems enabled me to make a smooth industry transition into the
rapidly growing Renewable Energy Sector in the UK."
Erlend (Class of 2010) said:
"I think the MSc was a great experience for me. I found the course both fascinating and challenging. I have learnt a lot in Edinburgh about sustainable
energy sytems and am delighted with the variety of information I acquired over the last year. Being in our current climate, I believe I would not have
my job if not for the MSc in Sustainable Energy."
Zhuoxiang (Class of 2010) said:
"The past one year was exacting and significant for me, an oversea student coming from China. I was very happy in an international class, and I enjoyed studying each course with my colleagues who helped me a lot. I also enjoyed my thesis project."
Charles (Class of 2010) said:
“The MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems is a very well rounded course with a broad spectrum approach to sustainability. The course covers technical modules,
but also allows the students to choose from a range of modules including policy, innovation, economics, management and environmental classes, allowing them
to tailor the course to meet their own specific needs. A demanding course, with great rewards.”
John (Class of 2009) said:
“I'm a recent graduate student of the MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems. I have found employment. Having the MSc was very important for getting this job, especially because I didn't have an engineering background.”
Antonios (Class of 2009) said:
“I have just finished the MSc course of Sustainable Energy Systems when I got a job offer from a wind developer company based near Chester.”
Hu (Class of 2009) said:
“As a graduate from sustainable energy system, I want to thank all at the University of Edinburgh for everything they did during my studying. I am now with BOSCH vehicle winter test centre in Mongolia of China. It is really cold here (below minus 40 degrees), but this is a pretty good environment to test the cars, as well as the other products.”
Bethan (Class of 2008) said:
"I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was an excellent year both academically and socially. Not only has it allowed me to explore many new avenues, it has also opened up many options for a future career and formed many life-long friendships."
Roddy (Class of 2007) said:
"I am going to work for the National Grid graduate management programme... ...this MSc has done exactly what I wanted it to: to be a good year and also get me a job in something I want to do."
Cian (Class of 2007) said:
"It was one of the most enjoyable periods of my life so far, both in an academic and social sense. I have recommended the course to friends and previous lecturers back home."
Nick (Class of 2006) said:
"The MSc course gave the opportunity for group work, so that we could share our diverse skills and experience in realistic tasks such as project proposals. Furthermore, we were taught by renowned experts in the industry, so gained the kind of insider knowledge that isn't written in any textbook!"
Alexandros (Class of 2006) said:
"The MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems provided an interdisciplinary and up to date approach to sustainable energy. As a mechanical engineer, I was given the opportunity to expand my knowledge in other fields as well as specialise in the desired subject during my dissertation. I am now continuing my studies as a PhD candidate in the Institute of Energy Systems."
Imran (Class of 2006) said:
"With energy being one of the primary concerns nowadays, this course certainly deserves to be seriously considered by any postgraduate student. To me the most unique aspect of this program was the wide range of topics it covered. Apart from technical issues, I was exposed to various sociological, environmental and economical aspects of energy systems and by combining my engineering background with the newly acquired energy expertise I was able to secure a job before my actual graduation."
Ma (Class of 2006) said:
"The MSc programme covered a wide range of subjects about sustainable supply of energy, and especially renewables. After the courses, essential notions about this area have been established, which entitles me more chances in finding an appropriate job in this area. The trips to the nuclear power station and wind farm gave me in-depth understand of the academic knowledge. Moreover, the staff are all very kind and helpful."
