Professor Peter Grant was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's birthday honours list in June 2009, for services to science, and Visiting Professor Quentin Leiper was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the sustainability agenda
Professor Peter Grant
Peter Grant was an outstandingly successful and inspirational Head of the School of Engineering and Electronics from its inception in 2002 until 2008. Prior to that, Peter led the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering. In 2008, he was appointed Regius Professor of Engineering. He was also a prime mover behind the Institute for System-Level Integration, the Edinburgh Research Partnership and the Virtual Centre of Excellence in mobile and personal communication - all key components of this university's engagement with external academia and industry. Throughout all of this time, Peter has remained one of the world's leading exponents of Signal Processing and Digital Communications and won the IEE's Faraday Medal in 2004 which recognises his eminence in these fields. He is a research leader, a much-sought after conference speaker, an influential author of textbooks in his field and at all times a "mover and shaker".
The University, the School and Peter's colleagues are all delighted by this well-deserved honour, which highlights a sustained contribution to science and engineering that goes well above and beyond the normal call of duty for a University Professor.
Visiting Professor Quentin Leiper
Quentin “Q” Leiper is a Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh where he chairs the Industrial Advisory Board for the Civil Engineering Degree Programmes; is involved in teaching civil engineering design and undertaking research. As Director for Engineering and the Environment at Carillion plc, Wolverhampton, he initiated and developed Carillion’s award winning sustainability programme.
Q was the 142nd President of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 2006-2007. The ICE has an 80,000 strong membership and is the first engineering institution in the world. Thomas Telford, whose 250th anniversary was celebrated in 2007, was the first president.
Q is keen to help demonstrate that corporate responsibility is not only right in the heart, but that it is also good for business and customers. .
Carillion’s sustainability strategy has put sustainability and corporate responsibility right at the heart of Carillion’s business strategy and its performance in this area led to it being awarded Business in the Community’s Impact on Society Award and becoming the BITC Company of the Year 2003.
