First Prize at Graduate Lecture

Many congratulations to Johan Hjertson and Sam Collins for being awarded the 1st Prize at the 2009 Graduate Lecture competition of the Institution of Fire Engineers. Their MEng thesis is on the fire safety design for a building at high altitude and enriched oxygen atmospheres and included fire tests conducted in Puno, Peru, at an altitude of 3801m.

Graduate Lecture 2009

The Graduate Lecture is a key event in the Institution's calendar. It was established under a deed of covenant by Past President the late Mr Alan Parnell and the late Mr Gordon Butcher to fund an annual presentation by a key personality in the field of practicing fire engineering.

Once again this year, the Graduate Lecture is generously sponsored and hosted by Arup at their Solihull Campus, Birmingham.

An invited speaker is selected for their contribution to fire safety engineering research and education. It forms the centrepiece of a one-day conference which celebrates the achievements of students who are studying Fire Safety Engineering at UK universities. This year the keynote presentation will be given by Dr Roth Phylaktou - Director, MSc Fire and Explosion Engineering, School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering Energy and Resources Research Institute, University of Leeds.

Students from several universities will present papers on their research projects, providing an opportunity for young fire engineers to present their work with substantial cash rewards for the best presentations.

In addition we will hear of the contributions that recent graduates have made in the Fire & Rescue Service and in engineering consultancies, giving students an insight into life after graduation from two different perspectives.
