Accessing School (SEE) Applications from the University Microlabs.

You have access to run almost all software used in taught classes 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. This includes ALL the software that runs on the Sun workstations in TLC.

Please note that:

  1. You have 24-hour access to the Microlabs at KB-Centre and Hugh Robson Basement in GS.
  2. From any Microlab machine, you should be able to run almost ALL[*] the software that is required for you to complete your coursework for taught classes.
  3. If you want to run a MS-windows application then it should be there[1][*].
  4. If you want to run a Linux application then, after rebooting into Linux[2], it should be there[*].
  5. If the software you require only runs on the Sun workstations in TLC, eg 3rd year: GATEWAY, NICEWAY, MASTAN2 you will first need to establish what is called an "X-Windows" connection from the Microlab PC to TLC. This is dead easy!
    1. On the MS-windows menu system, on the of the Engineering and Electronics Applications menu is an entry which says:
      • ``Connect to tlc.ee.ed.ac.uk'' or something similar.
It is often near the bottom but that depends on your file sort settings.
    2. Click on that and you will be invited to login to TLC and your normal X-windows session should start up[3].

[*]Restrictions:

  1. Aspen (windows only) is available on the higher spec machines in the 24 labs (KB3, HRB basement, ie the same set of machine that are also Linux bootable)
  2. Fluent Either run native on Linux or, run on Windows using Exceed to "Connect to TLC", but when then starting fluent use the fluent -driver x11 command line option.
  3. Abaqus: you need to find a PC able to be booted into Linux. Abaqus can then be run natively under Linux on the PC, or, an xterm opened onto tlc.see.ed.ac.uk.
  4. MS-Project is a MS_Windows applications available only on the designated machines in TLF annex. an alternative is OpenWorkbench and is available throughout the Microlabs (2007/09).
  5. Cadence Allegro This should now be available in the Microlabs (2007/9).

The displays in the Microlabs are somewhat smaller than in School labs which is a shame.
