Accessing TLC Remotely

1.  From a University Microlab PC running MS-windows

On the MS-windows menu system, at the BOTTOM of the SEE School Applications menu it says: "Connect to TLC" or something similar

Click on that and you will be invited to login to TLC and your normal X-windows session will start up.

What to do if the link doesn't work:

If you have any problems with the above link (it often breaks after a lab upgrade), an alternative is to do the process manually:

In the start menu, goto communications -> exceed -> exceed

This should start the exceed server and you should see an icon for it at the bottom of the screen. Then from the same menu you should be able to run the SSH secure shell client. If you click the "Quick Connect" button, you can specify the host: tlc.see.ed.ac.uk and your username. Then type in your password and click OK twice. Now you should have a x-terminal that you can type stuff into. If you run an application like cmacs, exceed should be able to display the window on your PC.

If it does not work, on SSH goto menu Edit -> Properties. If you check the "Tunneling" option on the left side of the properties window, the X11 tunnelling option should be ticked. The other thing to check is exceed. If you click on xconfig and check the communications option, it should be set to passive.

2.  Connection from `Home'

If you want to access TLC from a MS-Windows PC at home, via a broadband service, you can consider installing Cygwin. This installs a X-server on your Windows machine and will allow you to use the "ssh" command to login to tlc.see.ed.ac.uk. Using the flag "-Y" will setup X-windows tunneling and -l to specify your login name.

3.  Connection from anywhere using a PC running Linux.

Open an `xterm' and: ssh tlc.see.ed.ac.uk
