SunOs 5.8 (Solaris 8) Operating System

Overview

The new SunBlade 100 workstations run the Operating System SunOs 5.8 (Solaris 8) and over the summer we are converting other Ultra workstations to run this new operating system. The majority of existing programs should work with the new operating system, if you have problems running your programs under SunOs 5.8 then please contact: Support

Login Banner

The SunOs 5.8 workstations are now configured with the CDE login screen. This gives a number of different ways of logging in:

To Run	Do
CDE	enter username and password
OpenWindows	choose Options -> Sessions -> OpenWindows Desktop then enter username and password ("." files may need altering - email support )
GNOME 1.4	choose Options -> Sessions -> GNOME 1.4 then enter username and password ( *G ) n.b. This is an evaluation install ( "." files WILL need altering - email support)
Xwin	choose Options -> Command Line Login then enter username and password and proceed as normal
Command Line Login	choose Options -> Command Line Login

Other Changes

CDs are now mounted by inserting the CD into the drive and typing the command: volcheck To unmount first check that you are not accessing the CD and type the command: cdunmount
