Engineering - New Computers

Please ensure that you have read the IT Policy before you begin this process.

Obtaining a Computer

In order to find out more information on obtaining a new machine, please see the Purchases section of the Website

Starting with a New Computer

Once you have obtained a new computer, you will need to have it connected to the network to use Engineering services.

  1. Registration
    • If the machine has been purchased by youself, or you are wanting to connect a personal laptop to the network, it will need to be PAT Tested and Registered. The machine will also need to be Registered to be used within Engineering.
    • If your machine was provided by Engineering, then PAT testing and Registration will already have been completed.
  2. Network Connection
    • In order to access school resources, you will need a network connection. This can either be Wired or Wireless. Follow these links to find out how to use these facilities with your machine.
  3. Client Management
    • All Engineering machines are installed with dual-boot Linux and Windows by default. Linux machines are managed by LCFG, and Windows machines are managed by Machination. Pease read the documentation provided for each of these to discover how to manage your system, install applications, request changes etc.
  4. Network Services There is much information on other Engineering services, such as printers, remote access, VPNs etc on the IT web pages - please read the documentation given on each of these services.
  5. Applications There are many applications available for use within Engineering, some for local installation, some run from servers, and some for remote access via Unix/Linux. See the Application Pages for more information on the available applications and their access.
  6. File Store NB: It is a requirement of the University's auditors that your work is stored on the School's network filestore (N: in Windows) rather than the computer's internal hard disk. You know it makes sense.
