What is my email address?

  • Staff & Postgraduate research students will have an email address, based on their name, given to them in the @ed.ac.uk directory.
  • All students will have an address based on their name, given to them in the @sms.ed.ac.uk directory.
  • If you are in any doubt what your email address is, try looking yourself up in the University search pages. If you are unsuccessful, please submit a request to SeeSup.

You should always quote the above address for all use, whether internal or external.

PS: Postgraduate research students are allocated a name@sms.ed.ac.uk by the University Registry. The policy in the College of Science and Engineering is that schools also allocate research students a name@ed.ac.uk address, which is the preferred address to use.

Setting Up Your Email Client

Information services has a page describing how to set up various email clients. SEE recommends Thunderbird, since it's the only one in the supported list that works on all our platforms.

Mail filters, Spam Filters and Out of Office Notifications.

This too is covered by Information Services documentation .

Sending Mail:  Use of Attachments

Before attaching files to email messages, please bear in mind the C&IT document distribution recommendations.

In general,

  • Use an appropriate file format. Don't send two lines of plain text as a Word document, for instance.
  • Don't send large files to large numbers of people. There are much better ways of sharing files such as putting them in your Web space or on a shared filestore.
  • If you must send files such as Word documents or executables, make sure you check them for viruses first. Make sure the recipient is expecting it and knows what to do with it.

A bit of common sense can save a lot of trouble.
