Sun Solaris Workstations

Policy

  • Never turn off a Sun Solaris workstation.
  • All Sun Solaris workstations are configured identically to run continuously 24 hours per day, 365 days per annum.
  • The Sun Solaris workstations are fully managed by the School IT team. No user intervention is allowed.
  • All Solaris workstations allow multiple concurrent jobs from console users and remote logins alike.
  • Groups of workstations are clustered into "CPU farms" and users should remotely login to a "farm" in order that the load is spread evenly across the available resource.

Current Integration Status.

  • The SEE Sun standard deployment is current in Alrick, Faraday, Sanderson and SMC buildings.
  • A single pilot SEE standard system has been installed in each of Crew and Kenneth Denbigh buildings (Jan 2003).

Applications

  • An extensive selection of applications is available for running on the Sun Workstations.
  • Any external software required should be submitted to the IT team for approval and mounting.
