Machine Issue

Policy

  • Any new computer system should be matched by the return to the IT team of a system being taken out of service.
  • The hard disk(s) of all returned systems will be wiped. The IT team will subsequently decide the fate of the returned items consistent with an overview of the schools requirements for less intensive use, eg experimental lab use, cannibalisation etc.

Procedure

Please follow the standard procedure outlined below:

  1. You will be advised by the IT team, when your system has been configured and is ready for collection. In response, please:
    1. arrange a suitable time,
    2. state the W-number of the system being returned, and
    3. state the U-number to which the new system is to be connected.
  2. Pre-exchange user actions:
    1. Please ensure all your files are copied to the network filestore, N: drive (or for Linux users, under your network home directory).
    2. For MS-Windows users, please ensure your profile settings are copied to the N: drive ready for re-installing on your new system.
      For Details see rebuild advice
  3. Monitor, keyboard and mouse
    1. At the agreed time, please convey the existing to the returns point. [Unless otherwise stated, in Fleeming Jenkin building Ground floor - cross corridor to AGB, on the table provided.]
    2. Proceed to the IT office to collect replacement monitor, keyboard and mouse.
  4. System unit (or laptop)
    1. Please then return the old system unit to the IT office for wiping
    2. Collect the new system unit or laptop from the IT office.
NB: users will be asked to login to the new system before taking it away. Windows users need to verify that machination is correctly installed.
    3. Network ports. All existing ports should auto-recognise the system connected and switch to the correct network. This can take up to 10 minutes. You may need to reboot your new machine 2-3 times during this period to ensure that the switch does see your new machine AND can make the change.

Thank you.
