SEE Supported Linux Clients

Supported Versions

  • The School supports a managed Linux client that is currently (2009) based on Scientific Linux 5.2.
  • The School supports Linux only on systems which have been purchased through the School's IT purchasing procedure.

Installation and Maintenance procedure

  • The School provides total Linux client management using LCFG developed by the School of Informatics.
  • No user intervention in the management is required or permitted.
  • Applications: To see what is on your system now, type:   rpm -qa | sort -i | less
If what you want isn't there, please request it.

Other Versions

We also operate turnkey server system with vendor supplied 64-bit versions. These will be migrated to an LCFG supported 64-bit version when appropriate.

Future Plans

SL 5.3 will be released soon and will be packaged and deployed in engineering. We expect to track the scientific linux distribution for at least as long as it is the central supported desktop.

No Longer supported

  • Red Hat 9 based LCFG.
  • Autumn 2006 FC5 based LCFG distribution (32-bit).
  • Winter 2006 FC5 based LCFG distribution (64-bit).
  • Summer 2007 Beowulf and grid clustering.

Any such systems are being migrated to SL5. If you wish to have your OS system upgraded, please contact SeeSup@ed.

User managed Linux installations (pre January 2004) are no longer supported and users should arrange through seesup@ed for conversion to LCFG management.
