If your computer is already in use and needs re-built for some
reason (for example - you want to move from an unsafe network to
a safe one), please read this section before proceeding. The
procedures described here are designed to transfer your work and
your computer configuration (assuming you want it) from your
current build to the new one as smoothly as possible. By
"configuration" here, we mean which software and printers are
installed on the computer, any firewall rule changes, and so
on. This does not include locally stored documents, or
personal software settings (your windows profile), including
bookmarks. Please take care to back those up.
The IT team won't be held responsible for any loss of personal
data.
You should follow the sections below for each
operating system you currently have on your computer that you
would like to keep.
The build form allows you to tell us which operating systems you
would like after the rebuild, and whether we should be preserving
an old configuration for you. We can preserve the configuration
of an existing Windows install if it has Machination, or of an
LCFG Linux install. We can't do this otherwise. Note that we can
port Machination or LCFG configurations from one computer to
another if you wish. You might find this useful if your computer
is replaced due to hardware failure or an upgrade for example.
-
If you currently have Windows without Machination,
make sure Machination can do what you want.
-
If not, make a request for the missing application or
feature. If a feature you require cannot be
accomodated by our standard procedures then you are
outside the scope of the automated forms and we'll get
in touch.
-
Fill in a rebuild
form to tell us what optional things you want on your
computer.
-
Before booking a rebuild appointment, make
sure you back up
any data on the local disk. SEE IT staff do not take
responsibility for any loss of data during the rebuild
process.
-
Once you have backed up your local data, book a rebuild
timeslot.
-
Either bring in your computer before your timeslot, or be
ready at the time of a site visit if one was arranged. The
booking form will tell you how long you should expect your
computer to be unavailable.
