Windows XP - Software Requirements for use in Microlabs

Operating System

  • Software must run on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
  • Software must NOT be based on any 16-bit (DOS/Windows 98) libraries.
  • It is an advantage if the software is 'Microsoft Certified', or 'Certified for use with XP Professional'
  • It may be an advantage if the software is supplied as an MSI (Microsoft Installer) package.

Installation/Operation

  • Software must NOT require access to 'restricted' parts of the file system during its operation (other than during install) - for example, writing files to the Windows/Root directory when run by ordinary users.
  • Following on from the above, software must NOT require administrative access to the machine when run (apart from during installation) as all users in microlabs will have no elevated priveleges on machines.

Licensing

  • Software should ideally be licensed via a license server - either Unix/Linux or Windows 2000/XP/2003. FLEX-LM License Manager for Unix is preferred.
  • Software should NOT require any hardware dongles for licensing.
  • Software should not be 'individually' licensed - that is, there should not be some tie of the software install to a specific machine - be it via MAC Address/per machine serial number, or a local dongle/media. This is because we need to be able to clone software onto different machines, and cannot guarantee the security of dongles on lab machines.
