Dr Martin Gillie
- From: Derby, England
- Qualifications:
- PhD, Edinburgh, 2001
- BEng, Edinburgh, 1999
Supervised Projects:
- Fire tests of cooling structures (with Manchester & Durham universities)
- Modelling connections in fire (with PhD student Kate Anderson)
- Structural aspects of the Dalmarnock tests:
During the summer of 2006 fire tests were carried out in an existing concrete block of flats in Dalmarnock, Glasgow. A fire was set in the living of one of the flats and allowed to flashover. Measurements were taken of temperatures, strains and deflections in the structure. These measurements, together with other information about the fire itself, has produced a unique set of data about concrete structures in fire that will be valuable for benchmarking numerical models. During the same test measurements were taken of the behaviour of FRP repairs to the concrete when fire protected in various ways. These tests were the first to examine the behaviour of FRP in a real fire, rather than in furnace tests. This work was in part funded by an EPSRC grant.
Other research interests
- Numerical and experimental investigations of structural mechanics
- Behaviour of structures in fire
- Behaviour of shell structures
- Behaviour of skeleton bobsleighs
