PhD Project:

Behaviour of earthquake damaged RC structures in fire

It is well recognised that in building structures fires follow major earthquakes. Seismic design of structures permits some structural damage due to a major seismic event as long as collapse is prevented, since it is uneconomical to design structures to remain completely undamaged during a large earthquake. So the effect of fire in a structure that has already been damaged by an earthquake is devastating. The study will examine the fire response of earthquake damaged reinforced concrete frame structures, the key aim being to answer the question: "What fire design provisions are required for RC structures constructed in seismic regions?"
