There are 2 recommended options for remote access to the school, connecting to a service within the school and running your applications and commands there, or configuring your computer to appear to be connected the school network.
The NX Service allows you to connect remotely to a Linux computer (VLX pool) or your Windows desktop remotely, and work there as if you are sat in front of it.
The Eng (SEE) VPN can be used to make your computer appear to be connected directly to the SEE network. Having connected to your local network at your location outside the school, you can then ``tele-port'' into the School network using this service.
Please refer to the IS EdLAN Access Services page for information on the University Wireless service, EduRoam, and other services.
If you want to copy files between your N: drive and your personal windows computer (including XP, Vista and Windows7) then we recommend that you load WinSCP http://winscp.net/eng/index.php.
The settings that you need to set are:
Host Name: sshgate.see.ed.ac.uk
Port Number: use default setting - 22
Password: leave blank
User Name: "your University login name"
File protocol: SFTP with SCP fallback
Remember to save your settings
Note: the default setup logs you into N:\myhome (if you want to see your N: drive links navigate to the ".n" folder).
Alternatively you can edit your setup so that when you login you the same setup as you would if you logged in in the School.
Highlight your saved settings
Click Edit
(Left Hand Menu) choose Environment -> Directories
Under Remote Directory, type in /home/"your University login name"/.n e.g. /home/s9912345/.n
Click Save
We offer ssh connections to the school, either to the sshgate.see.ed.ac.uk host, or to the vlx.see.ed.ac.uk pool.
An ssh client should be available on all Linux systems, and you can download Putty if you wish to use ssh from Windows.
Please note that ssh is more complex to use, and doesn't by default offer graphical access to applications in the way NX does. We would only recommend using ssh if you have a good knowledge of this protocol and have a specific reason for using it.
On Windows the School has a site licence for a product called sftpdrive which provides an easy interface to map an N: drive remotely. The license for this product has not been renewed and so we are only licensed for an older product. Please contact IT Support if you wish access to this product.
