(note the Request Form, email address and phone go first to the Central University Information Services (IS) Helpline who screen our calls.  Note they are dealing with requests from all round the University not just Engineering so please state that you are an Engineering user).

How to use the IT Helpline

The Eng IT Help Desk is located in the Alrick Building, room A116 and is open between 1000 - 1200 & 1400 - 1600  (except Wednesday afternoons). 

Laptop Clinics

IS run Laptop Clinics at the central campus and at KB.  Please use these clinics for problems with personal laptops (except for questions about accessing Eng file store etc).  Problems with School laptops should first be referred to us via the IT Helpline.  More information about the clinics is available here.

 


 IT News

  • Windows 7:  Work is currently underway on rolling out Windows 7. An update on progress and the scope of the project is available here.
  • Office 2010:  Office 2010 will be the default version of office on the Windows 7 machines.  Please contact David Stewart if you require access to Office 2010 in advance of the Windows 7 rollout. An update on progress and the scope of the project is available here.
  • TLA/TLB/TLD/TLG: PCs in these labs can run both Linux and Windows 7, please see instructions in the labs about how to login (do NOT reboot them); TLC: Is Linux only (do NOT reboot them); TLF: Is Windows only. Note TLA/B/D/E will be out of use for part of the summer for rewiring and reconfiguration
  • IS ECDF Compute Resource: Researchers are encouraged to use the ECDF compute resource. Engineering specific information on "free" and "charged" usage is available here
    • A course for Engineering Researchers (Academic/RA/PGs) is being organised on the 29th of May, please contact Bruce.Duncan@ed.ac.uk for more details.
    • ECDF run courses which help users make better use of cluster computers. Further details and booking instructions are available on the ECDF wiki here
  • IS Laptop Clinics: Please see the note above about this IS service for laptop users.
  • PURE: The Publications Repository is experiencing some problems with speed of access, workrounds are (i) use Firefox and (ii) access via https://www.pure.ed.ac.uk/.  In addition to help IS pinpoint the problem please fill in this document:  PerformanceIncidentReport.xlsx and send to: topure@ed.ac.uk
