THE PLAYFAIR LIBRARY HALL

The Playfair Library Hall is located within the Old College on South Bridge in Edinburgh. The Hall is known by many Edinburgh University students as an exam location.

The Old College once housed the whole University, but today it is the location of the School of Law, and of the Europa Institute, and is the centre of University administration. The Playfair Library Hall is situated on the south side of the College quadrangle.

The neo-classical interior of the Library Hall features an arched and coffered ceiling. The Hall was designed by William Playfair, renowned also for the Assembly Hall at New College, the Royal Scottish Academy and National Gallery on the Mound, the National Monument on Calton Hill, and the city's Regent, Carlton, and Royal Terraces

Along the southern side of Old College, Playfair constructed one of his masterpieces, the Library Hall. With its barrel-vaulted ceiling and running to more than 190 feet in length, it is regarded as one of Scotland’s finest public rooms.

It was used as a working library from the 1820s right through until the 1960s, when the University’s main collection was moved to George Square. It is now used to host dinners, receptions and prestigious lectures.
