The Institute for Infrastructure and Environment Seminars are
an informal forum for presenting and discussing work relating to Civil
and Environmental Engineering. These notes are intended to help you
make the most of your seminar presentation, and we hope that both
internal and guest speakers will find them useful.
Details of the current seminar series can be found at
http://www.see.ed.ac.uk/research/IIE/seminar/
Audience
The majority of your
audience will be from the Institute of Infrastructure and Environement (IIE), although the seminars are open to all, and
are widely advertised. The members of IIE have a variety of
interests, for example:
- Structural mechanics
- Non-destructive testing
- Construction and project management
- Environmental engineering
- Water resources management
- Fire safety engineering
- Particulate solids
Further information about IIE can be found at http://www.see.ed.ac.uk/research/IIE/
Timing
Your talk should last no more than 30 minutes.
So that everyone in the audience can take something away from
the seminar, we suggest that your talk starts with 10 minutes of very
general background to put your work in context. You should gradually
narrow and focus your talk, until the last 10 minutes is detailed and
targeted at the specialists within the audience. Broad
conclusions that everyone can relate to are always appreciated.
Your talk will be followed by informal discussion.
Specialist discussion
Due to the broad range of interests within IIE, it is often appropriate to continue discussions with a smaller group of specialists in your field after the main seminar.
