The group, part of the Institute for Infrastructure and Environment, undertakes research and investigation in the processes and products of the built environment. Its two clear themes are NDT - Non Destructive Testing and Construction, Project and Infrastructure Management.

The work is, by its very nature, highly applied and industrially relevant and work is undertaken in close input and support by industry. In recent years projects have been undertaken with industrial organisations such as Carillion plc, AWG Construction Services Limited, Network Rail, Highways Agency and others.
