The Institute has several research groups that undertake a remarkable range of research topics within the Infrastructure, Environment and Civil Engineering fields, with a focus on interdisciplinary and emerging areas.

These Research Groups all achieved the Internationally Recognized or higher categories in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, and all full time members of staff contributed to that exercise.

Specific internationally recognised research includes silo and storage structures, bulk and particulate materials, membrane technology, orthopaedic engineering, fire safety engineering, NDT of structures and other solid media, construction processes and management, bioremediation, renewable energy, sustainable development and international development.
