We are delighted that Professor Rotter has
been elected as Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. It is a great
honour for him and for the Institute. He joins Professor Michael Forde
as the Institute's two Royal Academy Fellows.
His citation on election is as follows:
"Professor Rotter is distinguished for his ability to link the principles
of mechanics to observation of experimental behaviour as the way to produce
improved understanding of complex structural engineering problems. A large
area of his work has been involved in understanding the structural complexities
of shell structures, particularly solos, in respect of the interaction
between the shell and the particulate contents. This has included conducting
comprehensive measurements of the practical imperfections in manufacture,
a feature that was shown to have very significant effects on behaviour.
As a result the performance of actual industrial structures has been greatly
improved. He is a valued member of both European and North American technical
networks responsible for production of various design guides for shell
structures." |
